Karnataka: 12 Sri Ram Sene activists booked for holding rifle training

Karnataka police have registered a case against 12 Sri Ram Sene (SRS) activists for conducting rifle training in a village in Bagalkot. According to the complaint, the SRS activists held a rifle training camp where 196 youth underwent training in the last week of December, 2024. The rifle training was allegedly held on the last day of a week-long 'personality development programme'. The training was held in a farmer's field in Todalabagi village, Bagalkote police said, adding that he had no idea that rifle training was part of the programme. According to Bagalkot police, the case was registered on the complaint of a Bengaluru-based NGO, All India Association for Justice. The members of the NGO submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police Alok Mohan seeking action. In their memorandum, the NGO had claimed that they were alerted after a video of the rifle training was shared on social media. PM Modi to visit France in February

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a state visit to France and then participate in the AI Summit to be held here in February, President Emmanuel Macron has said. “France will be hosting on February 11 and 12 the AI Summit, a summit for action, which will enable us to have a discussion on artificial intelligence,” Macron said. “Prime Minister Modi will be there immediately after the state visit to our country. This (the AI Summit) will enable us to have a dialogue with all the powers, IEA, US, China and major nations such as .... India which has a role to play as well as the Gulf States,” he said. Even though Macron said February 11 and 12, the “AI Action Summit” is to be held on February 10 and 11. French was addressing a gathering of French Ambassadors earlier this week. He presented his foreign policy for 2025 and spoke on a number of topics, including its equation with the US post-Trump win, according to his speech livestreamed on France24. Modi's last meeting with Macron was on November 18 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was the third meeting between the two leaders in 2024, after President Macron’s visit to India as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations in January and their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy in June, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said then. During the November 2024 meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advance the India-France Strategic Partnership as well as their shared vision for bilateral cooperation and international partnership, outlined in the Horizon 2047 roadmap and other bilateral declarations. They commended the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation, including in strategic areas such as defense, space and civil nuclear energy, and committed to accelerating it further with a view to reinforcing their shared commitment to strategic autonomy, the MEA said. “The two leaders commended the strengthening of trade, investment, and technology ties, including in the areas of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence, as well as India France partnership on Digital Public Infrastructure,” the MEA said, adding, “In this context, Prime Minister welcomed the initiative of President Macron to organise the forthcoming AI Action Summit in France.” EuroNews.com said last week that the AI Action Summit in France comes after the UK and South Korea hosted the first events on AI, gathering heads of state, international organisations as well as businesses. “France’s AI Action Summit, to be held on 10 and 11 February, aims to present Europe as the 'leading AI continent,' Euronews said, quoting the minutes of the bloc's telecom attachés seen by it. Rahul Gandhi gets bail in Veer Savarkar defamation case

A special court in Pune granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to his alleged objectionable remarks on Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar, news agency PTI reported. The MP (Member of Parliament)/MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) Court on Friday granted bail to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha on a surety bond of Rs 25,000 after he appeared before it through video-conferencing, his lawyer Milind Pawar said. Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi stood as surety for Gandhi before the court presided over by Amol Shinde, the judicial magistrate (first class) and special judge for MP/MLA cases, PTI reported. Pawar said soon after his client appeared before the court, they moved a bail application, which the judge agreed.   According to PTI, the advocate said that the court also granted permanent exemption to the Lok Sabha MP from Rae Bareli from appearing before it. The case was filed on a complaint by Savarkar's grandnephew Satyaki, who alleged that the 54-year-old Congress leader had made defamatory remarks against the Hindutva icon at an event he attended in London in March 2023. Earlier, Satyaki's lawker, Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, objected to Gandhi's application seeking virtual appearance, stating that there was no provision that allows an accused to appear in court through video-conferencing before securing bail. The court, however, permitted Gandhi to attend the proceedings online. Wearing a bottle green sweater, the MP appeared before the court and stated his name when the judge asked for it. The matter will be next heard on February 18. As per the complaint, Gandhi, while speaking at the London event, stated that Savarkar had written in a book that he and five to six of his friends once assaulted a Muslim man and that the freedom fighter felt happy about it. The complaint further stated that Savarkar had not written about such an incident anywhere and the Congress leader's remarks were aimed at defaming him. The court had earlier asked Pune Police to investigate into the allegations and file a report on it. Accordingly, the Vishrambaug Police, after an inquiry, submitted that there was prima facie truth in the complaint. Gandhi had skipped the previous court appearance on December 2 citing the winter session of Parliament which he was attending. Pawar had then assured that the Opposition parliamentarian will appear in the court on January 10.  (With PTI inputs)

Beed sarpanch murder: Protest march taken out in Jalna seeking speedy action

An all-party protest march was taken out in central Maharashtra's Jalna city on Friday, seeking swift action against the killers in Beed sarpanch murder case and resignation of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde, reported the PTI. The march was organised by the Maratha Kranti Morcha. The deceased sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, who belonged to the Maratha community, was abducted, tortured and murdered on December 9 for allegedly opposing an extortion attempt targeting an energy firm operating a windmill project. Walmik Karad, a close associate of Munde, has been arrested in the extortion case. Participants in the march demanded speedy investigation and called for Munde's resignation, alleging links between Karad and the murder. Leaders of various parties, Maratha quota leader Manoj Jarange and family members of Santosh Deshmukh joined the march. Local Congress MP Kalyan Kale warned on this occasion that inaction would lead to more public protests. He also demanded action against police officers responsible for the alleged custodial death of Somnath Suryawanshi, arrested over the violent protests that broke out in Parbhani over the vandalisation of a Constitution replica last month. Manoj Jarange urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take decisive action against the killers in the Santosh Deshmukh case and their associates, while accusing Munde of helping the accused. Ajit Pawar will soon know if Munde has any link to Beed sarpanch murder, claims Dhas Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will come to know "in a few days" if his NCP and cabinet colleague Dhananjay Munde has any link to the sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case, claimed BJP MLA Suresh Dhas on Friday, as per the PTI. Munde, MLA from Parli in Beed, is under attack from opposition parties and even some leaders of the ruling Mahayuti as Walmik Karad, the key accused in the extortion case linked to the sarpanch's murder, is his close aide, the news agency reported. Speaking to a regional news channel, Dhas said, "Ajit Pawar will come to know after a few days if there is a connection (of Munde with the murder case) or not. I have never claimed there is a connection. I don't say anything firmly (with firm conviction) on it and they (Munde's backers) must also not say anything firmly as of now." Dhas was answering a query on Pawar backing Munde on the issue. (With PTI inputs)

Dense fog in Delhi with zero visibility, AQI hits 409, flights disrupted

A thick blanket of fog covered the national capital on Friday morning, causing visibility to plummet to zero and severely impacting normal life. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded a temperature of 9.6 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am. The forecast predicts a minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius for the day, with "very dense fog" persisting throughout. As per ANI, the dense fog has significantly disrupted flight operations at Delhi Airport. In response, the airport authorities issued an advisory for passengers, warning of delays in flight departures. While flights equipped with CAT III compliance are able to operate, passengers were urged to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates. The advisory stated: "Due to dense fog, there has been impact on flight departures. However, flights which are CAT III compliant are able to land and depart from Delhi Airport. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted." Meanwhile, the air quality in the national capital has also deteriorated drastically, falling into the 'severe' category. As per ANI, the Central Pollution Control Board recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 409 at 7 am on Friday, compared to 299 at the same time yesterday. An AQI of 409 places the air quality in the 'severe' category, posing a health risk to residents. The AQI scale classifies air quality as follows: 'good' (0-50), 'satisfactory' (51-100), 'moderate' (101-200), 'poor' (201-300), 'very poor' (301-400), and 'severe' (401-500). As temperatures continue to drop, the plight of Delhi's homeless has worsened. Several night shelters across the city reported full occupancy, with all beds being utilised to protect residents from the biting cold. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has stepped up efforts, setting up 235 pagoda tents in key locations, including AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and the Nizamuddin flyover, to accommodate those without shelter. The combination of dense fog, plummeting temperatures, and worsening air quality has created challenging conditions in the capital, with authorities urging caution and preparedness among residents. Jagan blames Andhra CM, police, revenue officials for Tirupati stampede

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday blamed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, police and revenue officials for the Tirupati stampede in which six people were killed and dozens injured. "Entire police force was deployed for Chandrababu's Kuppam tour for three days and there were no police personnel for crowd management which led to the stampede,' alleged Reddy, addressing a press conference in the temple town. With police occupied with Naidu's tour on January 6, 7 and 8, "no force" was available to handle the crowd, he said, adding that this "shows that the chief minister has neither fear nor devotion towards God". Six devotees died and nearly 40 were injured in the stampede at Bairagi Patteda near MGM School in Tirupati on Wednesday night as hundreds of people jostled for tickets for Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy Temple on the Tirumala Hills. Hundreds of devotees turned up from across the country for the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam commencing on January 10. Former chief minister Reddy consoled the injured at a local hospital and demanded the TDP government extend an ex'gratia of Rs 50 lakh each for the kin of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh each for the injured devotees. Every year, lakhs of devotees come on Vaikunata Ekadashi (an auspicious occasion), and arrangements should have been made as it has been the practice. But this time, there was negligence and a lack of manpower to control the crowd, he said. Alleging that the sanctity of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the official custodian of the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, has been degraded, the opposition leader claimed that the stampede shows how the coalition leaders and the TTD top brass treat the devotees who come from far and wide for a darshan. "During our term (2019'2024) we had conducted such events with care and passion, but this year caution was thrown to the winds... The devotees were kept in parks and other places without even giving them food or water," he alleged. Further, Reddy asserted that the FIR over the stampede was booked under "ordinary" sections and claimed that the devotees had come from all the counters to complain about a similar situation and not just from Bairagi Patteda. "He (Naidu) had earlier too done the same thing during Godavari Pushkarams in which 29 persons were killed in a stampede which was the result of his publicity craze,' said the YSRCP supremo, referring to the incident during the erstwhile TDP regime between 2014 and 2019. On Thursday, Naidu suspended two officials and transferred three more, holding them responsible for the incident. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Bangladesh condemns India's claims of mistreatment of fishermen

The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Thursday called India's allegation of the "mistreatment of Indian fishermen" as "baseless and fabricated". The Bangladeshi MOFA said that the allegations undermine the spirit of trust between the two countries. "Bangladesh expresses its utter dismay and deep disappointment over the unfounded remarks and fabricated allegations of ill-treatment including physical abuses of the detained Indian fishermen by the Bangladesh authorities. Bangladesh firmly rejects such unfounded allegations which undermines the spirit of trust, goodwill and mutual respect between Bangladesh and India. Concerned authorities of Bangladesh have confirmed that, under no circumstances, were the detained fishermen physically abused. The matter was thoroughly investigated and it was found that no such ill-treatment or incident of physical abuse happened," the statement said. The MOFA further claimed that they treated the Indian detainees appropriately. "Bangladesh wishes to mention that the detained 95 Indian fishermen/crew members were treated appropriately during their stay in Bangladesh. As per international norms, consular accesses were duly granted to the representatives of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, who visited the fishermen during their detention. The representatives of the Indian diplomatic missions were also present during the release of Indian fishermen from the jails on 02 January 2025 and during the fishermen's departure from Mongla on 04 January 2025. The relevant hospitals completed the health screenings of all Indian fishermen, confirming that they were medically fit. During their journey towards the maritime border, Bangladesh Coast Guard authorities extended all necessary support and provisions," the statement added. The MOFA said that they expected the repatriation from India to be amicably solved. "The reciprocal repatriation process of the fishermen manifests the commitment of the Government of Bangladesh in resolving humanitarian issues amicably and collaboratively with the Government of India. Bangladesh calls upon all parties to avoid making such unfounded allegations that undermine the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect between the two countries," it said. "The reciprocal repatriation of 90 Bangladeshi fishermen/crew detained in India and 95 Indian fishermen/crew detained in Bangladesh was successfully completed in the afternoon of 05 January 2025 near the International Maritime Boundary Line. In the presence of the representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Fisheries, and Border Guard Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Coast Guard received 90 Bangladeshi fishermen/crew members and handed over 95 Indian fishermen/crew members to the Indian Coast Guard. Simultaneously, the exchange of detained vessels was also completed, two Bangladeshi fishing vessels, "FV Laila-2" and "FV Meghna-5", were returned to Bangladesh, while six Indian fishing boats were returned to India," the statement added. In a mutual exchange of fishermen coordinated between the Indian Coast Guard and the Bangladesh Coast Guard, ICG Ship Varad and Amrit Kaur successfully repatriated 95 fishermen along with four Indian fishing boats while handing over 90 Bangladeshi Fishermen including 12 rescued from a sunken fishing boat "Kaushik" on Sunday, as per an official statement. JD(U)'s Sanjay Kumar Jha accuses Arvind Kejriwal of 'hating' people of Bihar-UP,

Janta Dal (United) working President Sanjay Kumar Jha on Thursday accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal of "hating" the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Jha strongly criticised Kejriwal's recent remarks about "fake voters" from these states and demanded an immediate apology from Kejriwal for his comments. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jha expressed his anger, asking, "Why do you hate people from Bihar and UP so much, @ArvindKejriwal ji? You should not forget that Delhi is not your property, it is the capital of the country and belongs to all the countrymen. The people of Bihar and UP have achieved a position not only in Delhi but across the world on the basis of their hard work and talent." "The palace you have built for yourself is also built using the tax money of the people of Bihar and UP living in Delhi. Your repeated insult to the people of Bihar-UP is intolerable. You should apologize immediately," read the post further. Notably, the dispute arose after an AAP delegation led by Arvind Kejriwal met the Election Commission to raise concerns about alleged voter irregularities in the New Delhi Legislative Assembly. The party highlighted a significant surge in voter registrations and deletions on the seat while alleging a "voter fraud" taking place at a large scale. Former Delhi CM Kejriwal said that a total of 5,500 votes were registered in 22 days. He also claimed that out of 89 people who had applied for deletion of 5500 names from the voter list, 18 denied submitting the request. "The Chief Election Commissioner is out, but we met with the other two commissioners. One of the issues we raised was that in the New Delhi Legislative Assembly, between December 15 and January 7, a total of 5,500 votes were registered in 22 days. The total votes in this assembly are 1,00,000. This means that 5.5 per cent of the votes were registered in the last 22 days, which clearly indicates some irregularities. There are issues with these applications," Kejriwal told reporters after meeting the Election Commissioners, here on Thursday. "When the lower officials investigated, the individuals whose names appeared on these applications denied having submitted any request to cut votes. 89 people had applied for 5,500 votes, and 18 of them came to the Election Commission and denied submitting any applications. This means there is a large-scale election fraud happening," he added. Furthermore, the AAP Chief also alleged that from December 15 to January 8, 13,000 new voter applications were received. On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi wrote another letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, raising the issue of adding and deleting the names of voters in the New Delhi Assembly constituency and seeking an immediate meeting on the issue. CM Atishi previously wrote another letter to the CEC regarding the same issue on January 5. The Delhi assembly polls will be held in a single phase on February 5 and the counting of votes will take place on February 8. AAP won 62 out of the 70 seats in the 2020 assembly elections and BJP secured eight seats. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. "Trudeau paid huge price by souring his international relations": Punjab BJP VP

Following the release of the documents by the Justice Department of British Columbia, Canada, that showed that all four alleged accused in the murder of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar were no longer in custody, Punjab BJP Vice President Fatehjung Singh Bajwa on Thursday criticised Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's earlier allegations against the Indian government, claiming that his actions have caused significant damage to his international relations. On Thursday, the documents released by the Justice Department of British Columbia, Canada, showed 'N' against the status of being in custody against the four men--Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh--who were charged with the murder of Nijjar and conspiracy to commit murder by the Canadian police. Notably, ties between India and Canada have been strained after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused agents of the Indian government of killing Nijjar. However, India has dismissed the accusations as "absurd" and "motivated." According to the Punjab BJP Vice President, Trudeau had failed to provide evidence for his claims and suggested that even Canadians are no longer supporting him. "Today, a Canadian court granted bail to all accused in Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder case. Justin Trudeau levelled a huge allegation against the Indian government... The government said that he should produce evidence if he has any... So, I think Justin Trudeau has paid a huge price by souring his international relations. Justin Trudeau used to stand in support of hardliners; today even Canadians are not standing in his support," Bajwa said. Brar, 22; Karanpreet Singh, 28; and Kamalpreet Singh, 22, were all taken into custody in Edmonton on May 3, 2024. A fourth accused, identified as Amandeep Singh (22), was already in custody of Peel Regional Police in Ontario for unrelated firearms charges and was also arrested for the said crime on May 11, 2024. According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in British Columbia, they are accused of murder and conspiracy. Police personnel however had not given any evidence of any link to India as was being speculated in the Canadian media. At the time of the arrest of the alleged accused, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that Canada had not provided any "specific" evidence or relevant information in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing case and that no "formal communication" had been provided to India over the arrests of three Indians allegedly involved in the matter. Meanwhile, the former General Secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Bhagwant Singh Sialka, voiced his concerns over the matter and questioned the court's decision, expressing dissatisfaction over the accused being "no longer in custody" before the trial. Sialka noted that the situation is upsetting, and many Sikhs in Canada do not accept the decision. He pointed out that this poses a threat to the victim's family and witnesses, which may influence the outcome of the case. "It is not understandable how they got bail despite their trial on February 11. Because when they come out, they can threaten the victim's family and also the witness of this case. This may affect the entire process of the case. It is very upsetting, and all the Sikhs in Canada are not accepting it as well," Sialka said. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency in 2020, was shot and killed as he came out of a Gurdwara in Surrey in June 2023. The video of his killing that reportedly surfaced in March 2024 showed Nijjar being shot by armed men in what has been described as a "contract killing."
